Microsoft Surface tablets estimated prices.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Microsoft Surface tablets estimated prices.

The hardware cost of Surface RT is at US$300-400 and US$400-500 for the x86 version. Since the devices will not need to pay the licensing fee for the operating system. The RT version will be priced below US$399, while the x86 version is estimated to be US$100-200 higher based on hardware costs and priced at US$500-700.

Since CEO Steve Ballmer in a recent interview pointed out that a price level between US$300-800 will be the sweet spot for PC sales, some market watchers have interpreted the statement as a hint for Surface pricing.

7 inch tablets makers to drop prices when the iPad Mini is released.

According to  Digitimes Apple will have a big influence on the 7-inch tablet market just like it currently has with its 9.7-inch iPad series and competitors will need to drop their tablet prices as well as provide more value-added features for the devices.

Tablets priced US$199-400 are expected to drop in price to US$150-200 in order to help non-Apple tablet makers stay competitive when Apple releases its reported 7.85-inch iPad.

Razer Atlas - An Intel Core I7 Tablet

Bob Freking created a new tablet concept, the Razer Atlas, a 7 inch device with a Core i7 CPU, plus stylus, keyboard, mouse compatibility and phone features. The name Atlas comes from the Greek mythology character, the one who held the world on his back. He chose Razer, because it makes sexy devices, with top notch specs.

The Razer Atlas is a 7 inch Windows devices, with a Win RT version and a Win 8 version. So it can be selected in a Tegra version or core i3 to i7 version and it will have 4 GB of RAM, a 16 megapixel camera and a 7 inch 1080p HD screen. There’s also the option of associating keyboards and mice to it, plus the same S Pen that Samsung has. The price of the RT version is $800, while the maximum for the Windows 8 tablet is $1800, with Core i7 CPU and 4 GB of RAM.

That’s good enough to run games like Crysis or Portal easily, according to the designer Bob Freking. I see this as a desktop replacement and the definite laptop killer. It’s still too big to replace a phone and too little to play Crysis, if you ask me. 10 inches suit Windows 8 better, I think.

Amazon introduces the New Kindle Paperwhite.

Introducing the New Kindle Paperwhite, the Most Advanced EReader
Ever Constructed.

Higher resolution, 62% more pixels, 25% higher-contrast, patented built-in front light, 8
weeks of battery life and an even slimmer and sleeker design — only $119

New Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G — the top-of-the-line Kindle with free 3G wireless — only $179

New latest generation Kindle — small, light and even faster — now only $69

Kindle is the world’s #1 best-selling e-reader for five years running, and tens of millions of readers are already reading on Kindle. Today, Amazon is excited to introduce the fifth generation Kindle ereaders:

Kindle Paperwhite is the most advanced e-reader ever constructed with 62% more
pixels and 25% increased contrast, a patented built-in front light for reading in all lighting conditions, up to 8 weeks of battery life, and a thin and light design for just $119; Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G — never pay for or hunt for a Wi-Fi hotspot with the all-new top-ofthe-line Kindle e-reader with free 3G wireless for just $179; and the new latest generation Kindle, the lightest and smallest Kindle, now with new, improved fonts, faster page turns and an even more unbelievable price: $69. Meet the all-new Kindle e-reader family at www.amazon.com/kindlepaperwhite.

“Paperwhite is the Kindle we’ve always wanted to build — the technology didn’t exist to build a display with this level of contrast, resolution, brightness and battery life, so our engineers invented it,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “62% more pixels, 25% higher contrast, built-in front light, perfect for bed, perfect for beach, even thinner, 8 weeks of battery life — this is a quantum leap forward and the best Kindle we’ve ever built by far.”

All-New Kindle Paperwhite — The World’s Most Advanced E-Reader
Most Advanced E-Reader Display, 62% More Pixels, 25% More Contrast
Kindle Paperwhite’s display is the most advanced e-reader display ever constructed.
Featuring a 212 ppi display, Kindle Paperwhite has 62% more pixels, making text in books and periodicals crisp and clear at any size. Images are sharper, richer and show even more detail. Kindle Paperwhite’s screen has 25% higher contrast — the blacks are blacker, and the whites are whiter.

Innovative Built-In Light
Backlit LCD displays direct light up through the display into the user’s eyes. Kindle Paperwhite’s patented front-lit display guides light underneath an anti-glare layer and down toward the display, away from the reader’s eyes. This means a reader can read for hours without eye fatigue or strain. The screen brightness is easily adjusted for reading in any light. The Paperwhite display provides an unparalleled experience in the dark and in direct sunlight.

Breakthrough Battery Life
Kindle Paperwhite’s built-in front light is designed to be used at all times — both in daylight and in a dark room — for the clearest, crispest reading experience.

In order to use the light at all times, Kindle Paperwhite requires exceptional power management to maintain the battery life that customers love about Kindle.

Amazon’s light guide technology precisely diffuses the light across the screen and only requires four LEDs to light the entire screen (unlike LCD screens which can use up to 50 LEDs). The light guide is so efficient that Kindle Paperwhite has a remarkable 8 weeks of battery life, even with the light on at all times.

Free 3G Kindle’s free 3G connection means customers never have to hunt for or pay for a Wi-Fi hotspot — they simply download and read books anytime, anywhere in over 100 countries around the world. Amazon pays for the 3G connection on Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G, so customers pay no monthly fees and sign no annual contracts.

Built-In Wi-Fi
Kindle Paperwhite comes with built-in Wi-Fi, letting readers discover new content at home or on the road. Kindle owners also enjoy free Wi-Fi access at AT&T hotspots across the US.

New Touch Technology
Kindle Paperwhite’s new capacitive touch technology is uniquely integrated into the Paperwhite display, allowing for a thinner form factor for Kindle Paperwhite and even better touch accuracy.

Slim and Sleek Design
At just over a third of an inch thin and weighing 7.5 ounces, Kindle Paperwhite is thinner than a magazine and weighs less than a typical paperback. The bezel height between the side of the device and the display itself is 77% thinner.

Hand-Tuned Fonts
Every font on Kindle Paperwhite is hand-tuned for maximum readability. The Amazon typography team worked at the pixel level to ensure consistency of stroke thickness and shape profiles across all individual glyphs, aligning each size to the specific grid of the new Paperwhite display. This allows for unprecedented sharpness of fonts. Kindle Paperwhite’s higher resolution display also allows for new elegant typeface options, such as Baskerville and Palatino, which use thin stems that would not render well on any lower resolution display.

Time to Read
Time to Read is a new feature for Kindle Paperwhite that helps readers know the amount of time it will take them to finish a chapter or a book. This feature is smart — it personalizes the time for each customer based on their reading speed and is constantly updated as the reader’s speed and habits change. With Time to Read, it’s never been easier to decide when to start a new chapter or finish the chapter you’re reading.

Explore the “Bones of a Book” with X-Ray
With a single tap, readers can see all passages across a book that mention ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, places or topics that interest them, as well as more detailed descriptions from Wikipedia and Shelfari, Amazon’s community-powered encyclopedia for book lovers. Amazon built X-Ray using its expertise in language processing and machine learning, access to significant storage and computing resources with Amazon S3 and EC2,
and a deep library of book and character information.

Whispersync for Voice
All Kindles use Amazon’s popular Whispersync technology to automatically synchronize a customer’s Kindle library, including last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights, across the widest range of devices and platforms. Now, Amazon is extending Whispersync to professionally narrated audiobooks — customers can start reading a book on their Kindle, and seamlessly switch to listening to their corresponding Whispersync for Voiceenabled audiobook from Audible on their phone or tablet, picking up exactly where they left
off.

With Whispersync for Voice, customers can continue enjoying books during commutes
or any other time their eyes are busy. Whispersync for Voice is a solution for the millions of Amazon customers who want to spend more time with their favorite books. Customers can listen to their Audible audiobooks on Kindle Fire, iPhone, Android phones and Windows Phones.

Beautiful Leather Covers with Auto Wake and Sleep
Covers for Kindle Paperwhite feature a premium textured leather exterior and a subtle
woven nylon interior to provide the lightest and thinnest form of protection. The integrated magnetic clasp ensures the cover remains securely closed while in a backpack, purse, or briefcase. The cover automatically wakes Kindle Paperwhite upon opening and puts it to sleep when closed, making it easy to dive right back into the book.

Latest Generation Kindle — Small, Light and Now Even Faster — only $69
Introducing the new, latest generation Kindle — the smallest, lightest and most affordable
Kindle ever is now even better, with new improved fonts, 15% faster page turns and a new, unbelievably low price: just $69. In addition, the new Kindle now supports children’s books and comics, and includes new parental controls. Weighing just 5.98 ounces, Kindle is small and light enough to fit easily in a pocket and take everywhere, and still features the same 6-inch electronic ink display that reads like real paper. Q2 2012: Apple iPad captures 68% of Global Tablet Market Share.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Exhibit 1: Global Tablet Operating System Shipments and Market Share in Q2 2012  [1]

Q2 2012: Apple iPad captures 68% of Global Tablet Market Share.

According to the latest research from  Tablet & Touchscreen Strategies (TTS) service, global tablet shipments reached 25 million units in the second quarter of 2012. Apple rose to 68 percent global market share, its highest level for almost two years. Microsoft tablets remain niche, but attention is turning to the upcoming Windows 8 launches.
Global tablet shipments reached 24.9 million units in Q2 2012, jumping 67 percent from 14.9 million in Q2 2011. Demand for tablets among consumer, business and education users remains relatively healthy. Apple shipped a robust 17.0 million iPads worldwide and maintained its strong market leadership with 68 percent share during the second quarter of 2012. Apple continued to shrug off the much-hyped threat from Android and the iPad’s global tablet share is at its highest level since Q3 2010.
Android captured 29 percent share of global tablet shipments in Q2 2012, remaining static from 29 percent a year earlier. Global Android tablet shipments grew by more than half to 7.3 million units. Despite high expectations for companies like Amazon, Samsung, Acer and Asus, the Android community has yet to make a serious dent in Apple’s dominance of the tablet market. Unspectacular hardware designs, limited uptake of cellular models and a modest number of tablet-optimized services have been among some of the main reasons for Android’s mixed performance so far.
Other findings from the research include:
  • Global tablet shipments grew 67 percent annually in Q2 2012. Demand remained relatively healthy, although this was the industry’s slowest growth rate since the finger-driven tablet market began in Q2 2010, as shipments of some Android and Apple products moderated slightly in a volatile world economy;

  • Microsoft captured a niche 1 percent global tablet share in Q2 2012. The upcoming release of Windows 8 later this year cannot come quickly enough for Microsoft, so its hardware partners, like Dell, can start competing more effectively in the tablet space.

China: Apple will start selling the New iPad in July 20.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

China: Apple will start selling the New iPad  in July 20.

Apple will start selling the newest version of the iPad in China on July 20 after paying $60 million to settle a dispute over the ownership of the tablet computer's name.

Apple Inc. says it will begin selling its latest iPad starting at $499 and will cut the price of the older iPad 2 to $399.

The tablet computers will be sold online, at Apple stores, and through approved resellers.

Apple often brings products to China later than in other countries. The iPad model coming to China this month went on sale in the U.S. and several other countries in March. It features a sharper screen and a faster processing chip than the previous two iPad models.

Apple still dominates the emerging market for tablet computers, though Google and Microsoft are both coming out with competing devices.

The name dispute had threatened iPad sales in China, Apple's second-largest market after the United States and the source of much of its growth.

Apple, which is headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., said it bought the global rights to the iPad name from Shenzhen Proview Technology in 2009, but Chinese authorities said the rights in China were never transferred. A Chinese court ruled in December that Proview still owned the name in China and the company asked Chinese authorities to seize iPads.

To settle the dispute, Apple paid Proview $60 million to gain the rights to the iPad name. The company won approval from Chinese regulators for the device in May.

Apple's Next iPad will be a Rival Google Nexus 7 in terms of cost and size

The arguably high price tag of the Apple iPad has hardly been a detriment to the tablet’s wild popularity since its release, as Apple continues to enjoy a stranglehold over the tablet market.

Even still, Apple is rumored to have plans to release a smaller, and more wallet-friendly device designed to directly compete with the current 7-inch tablet market, including Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet.

This time around, the forthcoming iPad screen is expected to be standard definition, and between 7 and 8 inches, compared to the high-definition 9.7 inch version that’s currently available. While official specs and a release date have yet to be disclosed, consumers should be able to expect an announcement by early fall, and the new iPad by the end of the year.
